Chapter 4 – The Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of AdSense Ads

Two of the most important axioms of Internet marketing are to know your advertising medium and know your audience. If your AdSense ad design and placement is driven by emotion and personal preference rather than facts, then you will ultimately fail as an Internet marketer. It is imperative to use ad designs that are effective while taking into account what you know about your audience.

Let’s first talk specifically about ad design. When using Google’s text ads you do not want to use borders. Many people believe the borders make their Adsense ads stand out, and they would be correct. Therein lays the problem. You do not want your ads to stick out like a sore thumb. You’re sending a signal that this is an ad and most people have an aversion to being solicited. Therefore their reaction, in a sense, is to dodge or ignore the ad. However, if your Adsense ads look like they’re a regular part of your web page visitors to your website are more apt to scan the ads and hopefully click on them.

What about ad color? This may insult your artistic proclivities, but stay with the regular Google ad colors which consists of the blue link and black text. The reason for using this color scheme is because people are conditioned to recognize the blue text as hyperlinks and that they should click on them. Because of the blue link, your visitor’s subconscious mind is telling them that some action needs to take place. If you use some other color like bright green or pink, you are disrupting your visitor’s normal surfing habits.

Also, stay with the white background. There’s a reason why we typically write on white paper – it’s easier to read. A colored background makes the ad stand out, which is not what you want. Remember, you want the ad to blend in with the rest of your web page. Furthermore, colored backgrounds make the ad more difficult to read. Now there has been some discussion in the marketplace as to the effectiveness of using red as your link color. If you wish to give it a try that is your prerogative, but you are encouraged to stay with blue.

Regarding ad design and color, you want your AdSense ads to blend well with your site. You want them to compliment your site and appear as if they’re providing additional content. You do not want them to appear as though they are contrasting with your website. When your AdSense ads contrast with your site it creates a condition known as ad blindness. That’s right, the more your ad stands out the less likely visitors will see it.

Now that we have addressed ad color let’s talk about ad size. The best performing ad sizes according to Google are the following:

336×280 large rectangle (four ads)
300×250 medium rectangle (four ads)
160×600 wide skyscraper (five ads)

When designing your website keep these facts in mind. However, you do not want to arbitrarily squeeze certain AdSense ads into your site just because they have been designated as the best performing. The other ad sizes have value as well. The purpose of revealing these facts is to let you now that the wider formats tend to perform better. The reason is because they are more readable.

Currently Google allows you to place three text ads on each page of your site. It is suggested that you strategically max out your allotment of ads on each page. But this raises the question of “Where?”

The content of your page determines the best location to place your AdSense ads. When placing your ads there are certain things to consider.

Where is my visitor’s attention likely to be focused?
How can I place ads into an area without getting the user’s way?
How can I keep the web page clean and uncluttered?

Google provides an ad placement schematic to which they refer as their “heat map.” This is a diagram of the most productive ad placements. Here are their most productive ad locations:

> Top of the web page.
> Bottom of the web page.
> Upper left-hand corner.
> In the middle-left of your page content.

This serves only as a guideline. Put your users first when deciding on ad location. Consider their viewing habits and what will be most interesting and useful to them.

If you follow these simple guidelines regarding your AdSense ads you will discover that you will have a better response to your ads and therefore a higher click through rate. Do not allow emotions and personal preferences to determine ad design, color and placement. Your goal is to make money from your AdSense ads. If you can’t help yourself and wish to get personally creative and emotionally involved, give up Internet marketing and become an artist.

Everybody on the Internet is an expert, at least if you let them tell it. And everybody who
self proclaims to be anybody knows somebody else who is a self appointed guru. Still, there are a few guys who are like EF Hutton – when they speak me listening.

I’m not a fool! The way I figure it is like this. Anybody who has 100,000 links on the Internet, or a website ranking in the top 3% of all web sites must know at least a little something about Internet marketing. So, I pay attention to what they do and say.

I don’t buy al they say hook line and sinker, but I do pay enough attention to get the gist of what they’re saying, apply it to my progress as an Internet entrepreneur and get on with the business of making money on my computer.

But what you don’t hear a lot about are the thousands of people on the Internet making relatively good amounts of money, hundreds to thousands of dollars a month, without spending a lot of money.

I think of them as a silent majority. For more results go to www.adsense-income-exposed.com. They don’t fly to every seminar in the country just to make contacts and they rarely do joint ventures, because they’re relatively obscure and unknown. They are the people who literally sit in front of their computers in their pajamas, click a few links, and wait for the money to roll in and many are doing it by using Google AdSense Adlink Units.

They’re thin, flexible in design and are useful for a broad range of applications.

Many thought that they would be ineffective and ignored by web site owners, but boy were they wrong. Now, they directly compete for space directly with the traditional ad units, making it harder than ever for publishers to figure out which ads to place where.

AdSense profit Biz Alternative Google
AdSense affords any and everybody with a computer an opportunity to make money, but may not be for everybody. Fortunately, there are alternatives to Google. Below are a few for your consideration.

Chiquita. Chiquita enables Bloggers to monetize their original content and opinions by driving traffic to their sites. It also offers retailers new distribution channels to merchandise their products, thereby giving consumers more and better access to a broader base of expert services and advice. Chikita was founded in 2003 and has built a network of more than 12,000 participating blogs and websites, and is adding new members daily.

Clicksor. Clicksor offers webmasters the opportunity to earn more income by simply underlining a selection of clickable text (inline text links). All you need to do is to embed a short html code on your Web site. Whenever someone visits your site, your defined keywords will be replaced by a Clicksor link. In addition, you can also display our text based banner in a selectable size.

Yahoo. Finally lets mention Yahoo just for the heck of it. Yahoo is currently playing catch up to Google and is trying to release its own context sensitive advertising service. While it promises to be a good alternative to Google, the reality may be that it ends up being a copy of something that works pretty well, including similar ad placement restrictions and minimum payout amounts. Still it’s worth checking out.

Most Expensive Google AdSense Search
Summarily, when launching and/or expanding your Google AdSense marketing you might as well start competing for some of the higher paying keywords; like mesothelomia and all things related to it, debt consolidation, insurance, etc.

Some web masters ignore these high paying keywords because they believe the competition is too keen to profit by them. Who knows, they may be right. However, I believe that a website age is a website page that lives a long time on the Internet, and that pages are indexed pretty frequently, and who is to say that your page for one of these top paying keywords won’t start earning you big dollars?

Chpater 3 – The Important Relationship Between AdSense and AdWords

Before continuing further in the AdSense discussion it is important to understand the relationship between Goodle AdSense and Google AdWords. When it comes to pay-per-click advertising AdWords is hands down the Internet leader.

AdWords are those text advertisements that appear down the right hand-side of a Google search page. The ads are directly related to the keywords you use in your Google search. Advertisers are assured that there advertisements are shown to individuals who already have an interest in their product. AdWords is an amazingly powerful and effective advertising platform on the Internet as businesses are able to advertise in a highly targeted manner.

For example, let’s assume you sell widgets. You can set up your AdWords campaign to only to be shown when people type the word “widgets” in the Google search form. Your ad is shown to a person who has some form of interest in widgets. If someone types in “cars” then your ad will not be shown.

Obviously Google wishes to make a profit from AdWords so when an individual clicks on one of these ads Google charges the advertiser for the click. There is no set charge, rather advertisers bid for keywords and ad position. The advantage to advertisers is that their money is not wasted on non-interested parties clicking on their ads. With the AdWords system Google has enabled small businesses to compete in the Internet marketplace without breaking the bank.

AdSense was a follow-up program to AdWords, allowing website owners to get a piece of the advertising pie. As an extension of AdWords, AdSense allows website owners to place AdWords ads on their web pages. The difference regarding which ads are displayed is not determined by search keywords, but rather by page content. As an AdSense member, Google gives you a piece of JavaScript to paste in the code of your web page. That’s it. This JavaScript enables Google to decide which ads are most appropriate to show on your web page and tracks ad performance as well.

Google’s advanced content recognition technology is so intuitive that it determines which country an Internet surfer is from, displaying ads accordingly. For example if your website sells widgets, Internet surfers in the USA would see advertisements from USA widget retailers and British Internet surfers would see advertisements from British widget retailers. When someone clicks on one these of ads from your website the advertiser is charged a fee and you receive a portion.

Google has established safeguards preventing website owners from clicking on their ads to generate income. They can determine if someone is committing fraud and will ban such individuals from AdSense forever. Participating in this fraudulent behavior is stealing and hurts the industry in general. When individuals are caught and banned it is a positive for the rest.

It is advised that you open an AdWords account in addition to your AdSense account. This will become clearer as we address future AdSense subjects. Like AdSense, AdWords is free to join.

This was a basic presentation of how AdSense and AdWords are related. It is important to study this relationship further to succeed in generating and maximizing revenue from AdSense. Many website owners simply join AdSense, insert the code, expecting the dollars to flow. When reality and expectation don’t meet, the website owner becomes disillusioned and abandons AdSense. Like most things in life, success takes work and perseverance. If you’re expecting quick money you need to look elsewhere. However, if you do your homework and grasp these fundamental concepts you’re on your way to doing well.

Getting Started With Adsense

A very important element in the rapid adoption of AdSense is that it has been very easy for publishers to get the ads on their site as quickly as possible.

Integrating AdSense in your website takes only a few minutes, and you can be on your way with one or more nicely integrated AdSense ads.

The first thing you need to do is navigate to http://www.google.com/adsense and either apply or log in with your existing account and password. What follows is a page presenting the Google AdSense Terms and Conditions which you must agree to in order to proceed.

You are presented with a report page which you can use to get a detailed status on how your AdSense advertising is doing. This allows you to improve your site’s contents and layout to maximize your AdSense earnings.

On the top of your page you also have link to the setup section where you can generate the code that will need to be pasted on your website in order to have AdSense banners on your page.

You can use AdSense for text (the said ads), using a search box or with referrals. Your choice among these options depends on how users will navigate your site.

Finally, there is a “My Account” tab which allows you to set up details concerning your account, payment and tax information.

To add a text ad on your site, go back to the “AdSense Setup” tab and click the “AdSense for content” link. Make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser.

You can make a choice between ad units and link units. The former contain text and or images concerning a certain site for each unit, most with a detailed description, the latter only contain links to certain types.

Of course, it’s a bit hard to know which type you should use so you should probably experiment with both for a while before you decide.

You can also view an example of how the unit will look to the right of your page. However, you may only use three ad units and one link unit on any given page. This is believed to be a step which Google takes for quality control.

The next step is to choose your add format and colors. You can basically select any color palette you choose with Google offering some of its own if you don’t have the time or skill to create one. You can constantly view how the palette will look through the aid of an example. The one that works best in terms of appearance and revenues will vary with the look, feel and content of a website.

However, your ad formats are limited to a choice of eleven formats. There’s an “Ad Formats” link which takes you to a page that lets you see all even of these in action so you can decide best which one suits your site. Sometimes the most intrusive, doesn’t work best however again, this can vary from website to website.

After you finish with customization, you can click “Continue” from the bottom of the page.

You are now presented with a section entitled “AdSense for Content”. You can click anywhere in the text and that shows the JavaScript required to get AdSense running. This will automatically select the text in the box.

You can then copy it and paste it into your pages directly. If you use dynamic pages, you should paste this code within your template so as to ensure that it gets displayed on any page of your website. Some advertisers choose not to display Adsense on every page, and this is understandable. An example of this is a company that has adsense, may also have terms and condition which would inevitably provide legal resources which would probably be deemed inappropriate.

What is then left for you to do is get content on your page (provided you didn’t have any already). Google AdSense crawlers will soon visit your site, making sure that the ads displayed are relevant to your site’s content.

And you’re all done. For a simple page this should indeed be a matter of a few minutes, which is precisely what makes AdSense the choice for so many. Although it is quick, its mass appeal also makes it the best. Through being the most popular, advertisers and publishers alike see Adsense and Adwords as their natural first choice.

As it becomes more and more difficult to earn money with Affiliate marketing, earning money with Adsense is back. What is the most easiest way for a newbie to start an online business ?? Right: Adsense. You don’t have to deal with customers. Do you know why a lot of people are hesitant to start an online business? Yes, because they fear to handle customers complaints and refunds etc. What do you think is the second big hurdle people are having problems with making money online.

They think they need to sell and are not sure where to get inventory from. Guess what, with Adsense you don’t need to worry about inventory, storage, delivery etc. In simple words: Your write – You upload – You Earn ! You can simply start a blog, for example Blogger.com or WordPress.com offer easy to use blogs. You can then start writing and adding content regularly. By doing this you will earn money from your Adsense ads you have incorporated into your site. Or you could start a directory, article or a big portal website. People add THEIR content to YOUR site and you are in business. But be aware that setting up those big directories is time intensive and costly. An alternative could be to purchase some Adsene-Ready Turnkey websites. You can simply modify one file with your Adsense code, and all article content pages automatically show Adsense ads with your code. You can then simply upload and advertise your article content pages. You will be surprised how easy it is to make money with Adsense.

And you don’t have to worry if you have chosen the right words, sales copy etc. If you funnel your traffic it’s almost impossible not making any money with Adsense. Some people might think that Ready-To-Go Adsense site are a problem for search engines as they could show some duplicate content. I have another opinion about duplicate content. If I look for a specific article I want to read and I search Google, do you think this article comes up only once? No way. For example: Some time ago I have written an article and submitted to huge number of article directories. If the myth of duplicate content would hold true I would only find my article on one site or directory. But this article has been distributed through more than 7,000 different sites all over the internet. So, does Google still index ‘duplicate content’. Sure Google does it – Big times. If Google would not index any duplicate content sites, thousands of article directories would be immediately out of business. And look at the trend !

Every day new article submission sites are born and all what they do is to show duplicate content. And do you think they earn with Adsense? You bet they are, otherwise they wouldn’t have started this business in the first place. So, if you use a combination of Ready-to-go Adsense Turnkey sites and an article directory, you simply can’t fail earning money with Adsense.

Alternative to Adsense ? How to Sell Ad Space Direcly to Advertisers

Leave a Comment Written by admin

Not sure how to monetize your Ad Space? Of course Google Adsense is a great place to start but there is one Adsense alternative which you should consider. After spending time and money promoting your blog or website, it seems only fair to make the most of your efforts.

Sell Advertising Space Direct

Why share your profits with ad networks? You can sell your Banner Space direct to advertisers and marketers yourself. All you need is an “Advertise Here” link and to promote your Ad Space.

Ad networks take a commission of 20-50% (depending on which network). Also, according to the IAB, publisher’s inventory is discounted up to 90% by ad networks because of the oversupply.

If you decide to sell Advertising Space direct, you will save on commission and potentially get a higher price.

There’s another benefit to selling direct to advertiers: you can sell based on time. For example, you can offer placements for a week, fortnight or a month. Rather than having to rely on viewers to click on a Banner Ad or to visit your website, you can obtain a specific amount of advertising revenue for that period of time.

How to Sell Ad Space

To find advertisers, contact websites you believe would be interested in advertising with you. You may also list your available spots at an Ad Space Auction website like Bidswamp.com. Auctioning off your Ad Space is a good way to find out its market value.

You should be aware, however, that there is more work involved in selling privately compared to taking the passive choice of employing an agency or ad network. Automated systems provide you with full reporting, enabling you to see how many clicks/impressions you served.

Unsold Inventory

While you are trying to sell Ad Spots, don’t waste a single impression. You can still use the benefit of network placements such as Google Adsense, Chikita, AdBrite and ValueClick for unsold inventory. Remember, while they provide a relatively easy to use option, networks shouldn’t be your only or primary revenue source.

Start by firstly selling Banner Ads directly. Contrary to prior belief, Banner Advertising is certainly not dead. Not only do Banners look flash on a website, they provide a larger profit potential.

Most websites and blogs start off by using Google’s prominent ad network. The benefits are largely time saving and detailed reporting. However, placing only Google sponsored links gives your website more of a recreational feel, as opposed to that professional touch.

Further, the Ads are placed automatically by the ad networks, limiting your ability to screen individual placements. There is no initial outlay but there is a relatively large commission taken out of the advertising revenue before the balance is passed to you after some time. Network Ads should be used only for periods when your Ad Space remains unsold through the direct sale method.

When to Start?

There is no ground rule on how much traffic you need to have before selling Advertising Space for Banner Ads. It all depends on your niche and your target audience. If you feel uncomfortable selling Banner Space direct, create a Google Adsense account and experiment with ad placement, sizing and formats.

Don’t settle for a mediocre income; use your web pages to their full potential.
